Texas Minimum Auto Insurance Requirements

The minimum requirements for auto insurance in Texas are often referred to as 20/40/15.  That series of numbers refers to the following amounts of coverage:

• $20,000—A minimum policy must offer at least $20,000 in coverage per injured person in an accident.
• $40,000—A minimum policy must offer at least $40,000 in coverage for everyone hurt in an accident.
• $15,000—A minimum policy must offer at least $15,000 in coverage for property damage in an accident.

These minimum requirements apply to all types of commercial and personal vehicles.

Common Car Insurance Requirements in Texas

Though the state if Texas has the minimum 20/40/15 requirement for car insurance, that amount of coverage is often not enough coverage to pay for an accident.  Many professionals recommend you purchase more insurance than the minimum required amount.  In addition to the required basic liability coverage, you may want to consider getting medical payments coverage, personal injury protection, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, collision coverage, towing and labor coverage, and rental reimbursement coverage.
