My Auto Insurance Coverage Options

Though you are only required by Texas law to have basic liability auto insurance to legally drive in Texas, you may want to consider adding the following types of insurance to your policy for additional coverage.

Liability Coverage

  • Liability—This type of insurance pays for injuries and damages to the other party’s body and vehicle if the accident is your fault.  See Liability Insurance Coverage for more information.
  • Medical Payments—This type of insurance pays for medical and funeral expenses for a person involved in an auto accident.  See Medical Payments Insurance for more information.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist—This policy pays for injuries or damages you suffer when you are the victim of a hit-and-run accident, the vehicle that hits you doesn’t have insurance, or the vehicle does not have enough insurance to cover the accident.  See Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage for more information.

Auto Insurance Property Coverage

  • Collision Coverage—This type of coverage covers damages made to your vehicle, regardless of who is at fault in the accident.  The insurance company pays any amount up to the actual cash value of your vehicle, minus whatever deductible is determined in your policy.  See Collision Coverage for more information.
  • Comprehensive Coverage—This type of coverage takes care of any damages that are inflicted on your vehicle from causes other than a collision.  Such causes include weather, vandalism and theft.  See Comprehensive Coverage for more information.
